First impressions of Firo are always deceptively simple. A friendly and pleasant young man, he seems to be almost too happy-go-lucky for his own good. He never seems to be concerned about anything, choosing instead to live his life on the go and respond to things as they come. Even when things seem to be complicated, Firo somehow manages to approach them as something simple. It's like he discards all the details and aims straight for the solution without bothering to understand the specifics of it.
However, that impression is only half-true. It's true that Firo likes to live a cheerful and carefree life, but the way he approaches it is very different from what he's willing to show. Spending his childhood on the merciless streets of 1930's New York taught Firo a couple things - observe everything around you, always make sure to be in the right place at the right time and never, ever show mercy to those who mean you harm. Firo treats this knowledge almost like a mantra; intelligent and calculating, he carefully reads people he encounters and always positions himself in a way that keeps him safe and ready to strike. His harmless appearance and easy-going manner are as much weapons as they are a source of charm. By appearing to be simple and approachable, Firo lets people get close enough to both become his friends and never escape if they mean to become his enemies.
This isn't to say that Firo is vicious or manipulative. A genuinely compassionate and altruistic person, he is always ready and willing to give people a chance. He helps out an old beggar with a few bucks (only to beat him to a pulp when the beggar attempts to knife him) and he rescues a complete stranger from a mugging simply so he can ask a question. His first reaction upon seeing a fire is running to see if anyone needs help; his response to seeing a friend in danger is to get between them and whatever is threatening them. For someone so good at keeping himself away from danger, Firo readily does ridiculous things for the sake of others. One of the characters once describes him as strongly resembling a traditional lead character and, indeed, Firo is always willing to play the hero when the going gets rough.
He is both impulsive and responsible. As a member of a powerful mafia family, Firo is always ready to shoulder whatever duties the organization assigns to him and approaches them very seriously. He has considerable skill with finances and management of resources; his original duty in the family is to manage and monitor their casinos, but he is eventually promoted to the organization's bookkeeper after the old one's retirement. Despite that, he has a lust for adventure and will always go out of his way to become involved in something. As mentioned above, he readily charges into any dangerous or exciting situation presented to him. By the time of 2002, 70 years after he has become immortal, Firo actually entertains himself by grabbing random tourists and journalists off the street, telling them the story of how he became immortal and giving them a demonstration by chopping his fingers off. He handles boredom poorly and will always find something to distract himself, whether it's work or getting involved in something unexpected.
When combined, all these traits shape a person both reliable and unexpected. Friendly and cheerful, observant and completely merciless, Firo makes for a perfect friend and the worst possible enemy. He's the person you'll always want on your side, if only because few things are worse than having him against you.
